Change or Die!

You have a choice.

You can either change or you will die. It's your life and you've just been to the doc for your yearly check up and he informs you that you must change your habits or you will die.

What would you do? Could you change when it mattered the most? What chances would you give yourself for changing? 100% ?75%? 50%? Try again. You likely wouldn't change. The likely chance of you changing using scientific odds are nine to one you won't. Why is this so?

All you have to do is look at the health care crisis in the United States.  It's a health care crisis going beyond $1.8 trillion a year. And you want to guess what 80% of the health care budget is consumed by?

Behavioral issues. Can you guess what those behavioral issues are that drive it up? There are 5. (And if you're not a psychologist and don't understand what behavioral issues are, it is something a person makes a decision about that affects the way they behave.)

One would think that crisis or death would be reasons to change. But why don't people change? A reason people don't change is because change is not something that begins in the head (information) but heart (emotion). For one to change you have to appeal to their emotions. And trying to scare them doesn't work.

I will never forget this comment I heard years ago while going to school about people who commit suicide. "People don't really want to die, they just have forgotten how to live."

So when it comes to changing yourself or others, assist and inspire them with a vision of hope, joy, and enjoying more of life that is pleasurable as well as work that is challenging and exciting. As a leader you have to inspire their hearts before you ever engage their brain.

Did you figure out the 5 behaviors that drive the health care deficit?
