Hit the Reset Button-40th anniversary of Landing on the Moon

I have included a brief video to watch. It's from the movie Apollo 13 and one that most of us who have seen the movie are familiar with. It will take about two minutes to watch and will be necessary for you to understand my questions and points I'm making.

There was a mission to be accomplished that was short circuited by circumstances beyond NASA's control with Apollo 13.  (Sound familiar in our present economical state?)  The priorities changed dramatically once they realized where they were, where they needed to be and what they wanted the final goal to be.

I'm curious as to what you observed in this situation when he called his team into the room?

1.  What did the flight controller do?

2.  What did he help them realize?

3.  What was the initial reaction in the room?

4.  Was there an opportunity for discussion and push back?

It doesn't make any difference if you're the CEO, a pastor, a parent, a partner in a marriage, an employee, or a person searching for the next steps in a career.  There comes a time when you have to re-evaluate where you are and where you wanted to be and then make the appropriate changes.

It's called 'adaptive change'. If you don't adapt to change, guess what happens? The same thing would happen to the Apollo 13 flight if they didn't make significant changes. You are DOA (Dead On Arrival) in regards to your goal. Adaptive change is healthy and a must to stay alive!

So here's what you can take away from the Apollo 13 video clip:  It may be time to hit to the re-set button and ask some questions.

1. Where am I now?

2. Has the goal changed?

3. If so, what do I need to change and adapt to in order to survive and bring about the best results?

If the goal hasn't changed, then maybe the processes for getting there have. Remember to preserve the core of what's most important and make the changes necessary to stay alive.

That's adaptive change. And it keeps you alive.

Those who adapt and make changes live another day.
