Don't know if this is a recession or depression (little 'D') economically. But how are you doing with encouraging others and checking on them during times like these? Just curious. Supposedly in the hardest of times people come together, depend on each other more, make connections, offer assistance, etc.
True for you?
Here's what I do know for me...I'm finding out about relationships with people I've had both personally and professionally. When someone calls and asks, "Hey how are you doing?" It makes me know they are not just interested in the small world they live in but are open to being involved in mine too. I honestly think checking on others is part of what Jim Collins means by being a Level 5 leader in Good to Great. In tumultuous times it's especially important to look 'out the window to encourage others and quit staring in the mirror at your own, poor, pitiful self.
So how you doing when it comes to window watching and mirror gazing? 'Navel gazing' (another name for mirror gazing) for me is a pity party I can't stand. So look out the window and make a difference in someone else's life. Call on that long winded friend, send an email to a former colleague, or better yet do the old fashioned thing and actually write an encouragement on a card and mail it for forty-two cents. Now that would be impactful!
Feeling like I can make a difference in someone else's life in these tenuous times makes me more hopeful and encouraged. So check on someone this week and let's make an agreement to reach out and be an encouragement to someone else. It makes a difference personally, professionally and if you are leading others, it will make a difference in the kind of true legacy you want to leave. I promise.
By the way Mark, thanks for checking on me. It was a pleasant surprise.
