Things I'm Learning About Working With YOU

I have to give credit to Alicia Morgan (www.AliciaMorga.com) and her recent blog "20 Things I've Learned as an Entrepreneur" for this idea and what I have learned from working with you.

  1.  It really is rare when someone keeps their word. I need to cherish it and cultivate it in me.
  2. Praise and criticism come from similar backgrounds. The first from values the latter from insecurities.
  3. Stop. Look. Listen. This is the key for a good listener.
  4. Sacrifices can be made, just don't sacrifice your family first.
  5. There is a difference between God's timing and mine, mostly time.
  6. FEAR: False Expectations Appearing Real
  7. We see ourselves "in context" always. We see others "out of context." The difference is a reason for disagreements.
  8. People are always believing the stories they tell themselves. Really.
  9. Having difficult conversations are hard, that's why they're difficult. Have them anyway.
  10. Always, always treat others the way you want to be treated: Respect, consideration, kind and thoughtful. It will be reciprocated.
  11. "Know it alls," really only know one thing... not very much about themselves.
  12. Friends disappoint you. Be friends anyway.
  13. Trials and hard times do happen. Welcome them. They produce character.
  14. Admitting you were wrong is hard to do. Do it anyway.
  15. Failure is an option, make the best of it.
  16. I respect those who have decided that losing someone or something important to them is not a reason for "folding their tent and going home."
  17. The shortest distance between 2 points is not always a straight line. The distance between 2 people who disagree generally is, so don't complicate it making it a triangle.
  18. In business, the people who got you to where you are today will not get you to where you want to be tomorrow.
  19. John Eldredge was right, "A man is never more a man than when he embraces an adventure beyond his control, or when he walks into a battle he isn't sure of winning." (Wild at Heart)
  20. Having a grandson is awesome.

So, share what you're learning.

Cool stuff. I attended a funeral last week and heard a few words of wisdom from the deceased. I decided I didn't want to be dead before my kids heard some from me, so I wrote down a few aphorisms of my own. Some I've appropriated form other, wiser folks, some have a biblical foundation, and others I've learned the "hard way". Take 'em for what they're worth.

Things I’ve Learned

• Practice grace. We’re all broken people.
• Show up. Physically, mentally, emotionally. It’ll put you in the top 10%.
• Do what you say you will do. Always. It’ll put you in the top 3%.
• Do what you know you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.
• “Balance” in life happens in the fullness of time. At any point in time, life is always out of balance.
• Pursue joy, not just pleasure. You will be happier if you do.
• Perception is the other person’s reality. Don’t make the mistake of believing it doesn’t matter what others think. The only real currency you have in this world is your reputation.
• Travel light and bring comfortable shoes.
• Read. It will make you a more interesting person.
• Give generously, invest wisely, and live abundantly.
• There is no such thing as mundane. Life lived well is an adventure and every moment is precious.
• Be here, now. Neither the past nor the future exists and the person in front of you is just as important as the one texting or calling and deserves your full attention.
• Practice grace. Especially with yourself.
