Warren Buffett and Bathing Suits

I spoke with a friend this morning who gave me this great quote from Warren Buffett that I have to share. It goes something like this:  "When the tide goes out you find out quickly who is not wearing a bathing suit."  Does an ugly picture come to your mind?

Right now the tide is out. In more ways than one, many of the environments we not only live in but work in are experiencing a constant change and transition.  Refusing to change only assures what we care about is deprived of what it needs to survive.  My marriage is an example of change and transition.

Becky is especially grateful that I'm not the same man I was 31 years ago. I'm thankful she's not the same person she was either. If we had not decided to compromise in our relationship, we would have never survived all these years. She and I have not focused on what we didn't like about each other but what we appreciated and loved instead. Consequently, we both have become more like the person we really wanted to be and have experienced a greater joy together.

Leaders are agents of change. You are called to seek answers to problems. Let me encourage you to not only focus on those things which are wrong or seem futile at this moment but also pay attention to the positive things that are going right, and  those that can be changed. Focus on the contentment not discontentment.  The possibilities and opportunities that life brings are great - give them your attention. The people who follow you are looking to you to show them not only what needs to be done in times of change but the kind of attitude needed no matter what life throws at you.

For me, personally, I believe my God is sovereign whether the tide is 'in' and 'out'.  Whether I'm one of those individuals with or without a bathing suit remains to be seen.  Not a pretty picture :)
