I remember as a kid hearing that phrase more than once. And I also remember telling myself that I never wanted to repeat it to my own kids. Not sure I accomplished that task but now as an adult it might not be a bad question to ponder.
When does one "grow up?" When does an individual actually become "mature"?
I'm not exactly sure what maturity is but I think I know what immaturity looks like when I see it.
Could it be maturity is to be fully developed, complete and "grown up"? But does anyone ever achieve "maturity"? Does one ever "arrive"in becoming mature anymore than one can become "perfect"?
For me maturity is a consistent movement forward while at the same time a process of leaving behind childish and adolescent attitudes and habits. It's becoming more and more responsible for the decisions you make, the motives you have, the behaviors you evoke.
When I see someone who I think is mature I think of stability and the ability to replace extremes with security and confidence.
So what are the marks of maturity?
- Understanding other's perspectives
- Patience with yourself and others
- Humility
- Self discipline
- Compassion and empathy
- Confidence
- Perspective
- Perseverance
- I know there are others you could add.
Hmmm, interesting. Looks like the characteristics for maturity look like those for being a leader.
Amazing isn't it?
